Rooty Rutabaga....

and his orchestra......

One of the Bag Lady's favourite authors uses the expression "he had a head like a rutabaga" - she wonders if he had this in mind.

LOL, rutabagas and sunshine!

I don't think I've ever tasted a rutabaga! They look, um, daunting. However, who'd have thought looking at a pineapple that there'd be anything good inside? So I will not pass hasty judgment on the humble rutabaga and will make an effort to try one someday.

Miz - the author, Robert Crais, writes about a private detective - love his sense of humour.
I'm well, thanks, and busier than a cat on a marble slab!

kcinnova - gotta love it! :)

Crabby! Good to see you! Rutabagas are also called Swede Turnips - they are good mashed with butter and a little brown sugar! They are also good raw, on a veggie platter with dip.

Oh, that's hilarious. Love the pic, and may I say that is one damned fine rutabaga.

That is a scary-huge rutabaga. The ones I see (and occasionally cook) are the size of the front row.

(Somehow, thinking about rutabagas makes me want cabbage. Odd.)

Dare I say it? Dare I leave it unsaid?

A rootin', tootin' band?

Sorry.

THAT is a huge rutabaga.
I've never been able to bring myself to eat one. I don't like turnips and they look like one...

Wow, those are some darn big rutabagas!

That's a scary fellow!

My butt looks like a rutabaga!

BL- Crabby stole my thought! Or maybe great minds and all that... I was going to say I love the name rutabaga, but I have NO idea what they taste like, and as I'd eat my own foot with enough brown sugar and butter, that doesn't help,

Is it like or between any other things? Nutty, herby, firm, stringy. I'm brave enough to try it with some encouragement.

P.S. from the previous post. I'm always awestruck by real draft horses, too.

dfLeah - thanks, cousin. I just hope he isn't woody. 'Cause then I'd have to change his name. Ya know?

Mary Anne in Kentucky - I'm not sure why a rutabaga would make you crave cabbage, but it's better than it making you crave cheesecake, I guess!

messymimi - thanks for the laugh in an otherwise drab, grey day! That cracked me up.

Geo - they are better than white turnips, really. Not as bitter.

BG - I have to admit, I was a little suprised at the size of the biggest one - I actually thought it was two, side by side.

Reb - he is a little daunting. I'm not sure exactly how we're going to cut him up to cook him!

Janell - it could be worse - I sometimes feel my FACE resembles that rutabaga!

Clare - they are often referred to as turnips, but I find them sweeter than white turnips (which I don't really care for). You peel, cut and cook them just like potatoes, then mash them with butter and a little brown sugar. I am not sure how to describe the flavour - tangy, perhaps. I almost always serve them at Thanksgiving (which, here in Canada, is next weekend!) along with turkey and all the trimmings. (Okay, my mouth is watering now. I have to stop trying to describe the taste, because I associate it so strongly with turkey dinner, one of my favourite meals!) Let me know if you ever try it, 'kay?

Oh that's just too funny, Baggie. And very impressive.. they're all yours?

I like rutabaga quite a bit. I'm reading your comments and am surprised to see that they're good raw. Then again, I only very recently started eating raw sweet potato with humus.. delish!

Oh and Janell's comment cracked me up. (not cracked up like a butt though)

Good morning chuckle. Thanks.

Hilary - yes, I grew all of these (some of them self-seeded from last year, too!) That Janell is such a kidder!

David - glad it made you grin!

Levi said...

I am not a kidder! LOL

Those are some HUGE rutabagas, girl. Very clever putting the hat on the biggest. I love rutabagas and yes, they are great raw. They're also really good if you boil them, mash them and mix them with mashed potatoes (and a lot of butter). Yum!
